Who are the SNL host and musical guest tonight, December 17th?
By Hector Cruz
An Oscar-nominated actor and a rapper who’s nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist will serve as host and musical guest on tonight’s SNL.
SNL will air its final episode of the year tonight, welcoming Casey Affleck to the Studio 8H stage for the first time. He’ll be joined by Chance the Rapper, who’s performed on the show twice before, including alongside Kanye West earlier this year.
Affleck recently took home a Critics’ Choice Award for his performance in the drama Manchester by the Sea, also getting a nod for Best Actor at the Golden Globes. He’s currently on the path to receiving his second Oscar nomination following a nom for his work in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
However, the praise has led to renewed attention on the sexual harassment allegations against the actor stemming from his time working on the Joaquin Phoenix mockumentary I’m Still Here. He was sued by two former female co-workers in 2010, but the cases were later settled out of court. Affleck follows in the footsteps of his older brother, Ben Affleck, who’s successfully hosted SNL several times before, joining the exclusive five-timers club with his last appearance in 2013.

Chance the Rapper last performed on the sketch series earlier this year in February alongside West, a fellow Chicago native, after making his debut on the show during last year’s Christmas episode. The rapper took to Twitter to ask his fans to help him choose his set list for his performances shortly after it was announced that he would be performing on SNL for a third time.
Chance is coming off of what has been the biggest year of his career following the release of his critically acclaimed mixtape Coloring Book, for which he received three Grammy nominations, becoming the first streaming-only album to ever be nominated. It was also the first record to chart on the Billboard 200 based on streams alone, peaking at No. 8, and it’s made several top 10 lists for best albums of 2016.
The 23-year-old rapper has also become more politically active, campaigning for Hillary Clinton in Ohio days before the election in a concert with Beyonce, Jay-Z, J Cole and Big Sean, and later leading a parade of voters to an early-voting site in Chicago on the eve of Election Day. He’s also slated to speak about civil rights threats at the NAACP’s People’s Inauguration on Jan. 21, the day after Donald Trump is sworn into office. His activism shouldn’t comes as a surprise as his father has worked for both President Obama and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
