Charlie Rose accidentally fires The Daily Show host Trevor Noah during an interview with John Oliver on CBS This Morning.

John Oliver recently joined the co-hosts of CBS This Morning to promote the return of his HBO show Last Week Tonight, which has been on a month-long hiatus. The British comedian discussed the “toxic” presidential election, Donald Trump Jr.’s Skittles tweet, and what it was like interviewing NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden during the nearly eight-minute conversation, but things took an awkward turn when Charlie Rose asked Oliver if he felt “sadness about what’s happened at Comedy Central” regarding the “two people who succeeded both Jon [Stewart] and Stephen [Colbert]” no longer being with the network.

Rose admitted that he thought Trevor Noah of The Daily Show had been fired after being asked by a confused Oliver who else he was referring to other than Larry Wilmore, whose The Nightly Show was cancelled last month.

“Unless you’re firing him live on TV now, which is an amazing scoop,” Oliver said. “Please don’t fire me in real-time as well.

He added: “No, Trevor’s still going, Larry’s gone.”

Following the confusion, Oliver went on to discuss his surreal experience winning at last Sunday’s Emmy Awards in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category for Last Week Tonight, before Rose returned to the topic heading into the commercial break, claiming that they are “thrilled that Trevor’s still there.”

“Oh, you’re given him his life back? Well, what a roller coaster for him this morning!” Oliver laughed.

Word of Rose’s misstatement reached Noah, who joked about the occurrence on Thursday’s The Daily Show before showing the clip as the episode’s “Moment of Zen,” stating, “Rumors of my death, while amusing, have been greatly exaggerated.”

The gaffe could lead to speculation that the veteran journalist may be privy to some insider information that the rest of us don’t know, but so far there’s been no indication that Comedy Central will drop Noah as host of The Daily Show, especially not this close to the election. While The Nightly Show’s cancellation showed that the network isn’t afraid to shake things up after only a short time, there are several reasons as to why Noah is unlikely to exit the late-night series any time soon, including the fact that the show’s ratings are nowhere near as low as its former lead-out.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO, while The Daily Show with Trevor Noah can still be seen Monday through Thursday at 11 p.m. on Comedy Central.
