According to a report from The Wrap this week, Al Franken appears to have been the most popular guest host of The Daily Show since Trevor Noah left the show in December.

Franken hosted the show in March and averaged a total average viewership of 792,000.

If the former Senator wants the job full-time, he’ll be competing with the likes of Roy Wood Jr, Chelsea Handler and Hasan Minhaj.

Franken is obviously no stranger to the conventions of late-night television. The 71-year-old became a comedy phenomenon after a famed run on Saturday Night Live over forty years ago.

The Daily Show expected to hire female host

Reaching the top spot on the ratings chart won’t be enough to secure your spot on The Daily Show, however.

According to a report from The Sun in January, executives on the show appear fixed on the idea of hiring a permanent female host.

A number of celebrities in the running, including Chelsea Handler, have called for greater female representation in the television category.

“They are considering a few different people at the moment and have even had one-on-one conversations with people like Chelsea Handler,” a source told the outlet.

“Each week is basically a test to see who’s best fit. They want the next host to be just as loved by fans as Trevor Noah.”

Jordan Klepper hosted most recently and has some found recent online fame in his reaction to Fox News’ settlement with Dominion Voting Systems.

Daily Show announces next lineup of guest hosts

The Daily Show will continue to try out a whole new set of hosts before they confirm the perfect candidate to replace Noah.

On social media this week, the Comedy Central programme confirmed that Charlemagne tha God, Michelle Wolf, Ronny Chieng, Lewis Black and Desus Nice will all make appearances as guest hosts in the coming weeks.

The late-night show has offered an incredible selection of hosts each week to keep viewers tuned in. Some have even suggested that the programme could continue with a guest host format permanently instead of seeking one particular host for a fixed position.

At this moment, Comedy Central has made no indication as to who is currently in the lead to take over.
