Stephen Colbert endorsed two candidates as potential hosts of The Daily Show. The former correspondent and current Late Show host thinks he knows who could fill Trevor Noah’s shoes.
Appearing on Hell of a Week with Charlamagne Tha God, Colbert said he’d be happy to see current Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood, Jr. take the gig. The late-night host also floated the idea of The Daily Show bringing back former correspondent Jessica Williams for the job.
Trevor Noah announced his plans to leave The Daily Show. The September 29 announcement came as a shock, even though Noah has spent seven years hosting the show after Jon Stewart. Noah and Comedy Central did not announce a departure date. However, the network made it clear it’s actively searching for a replacement.
Colbert also mentioned Amber Ruffin as a potential Daily Show host. But Colbert acknowledged that Ruffin is doing quite well in her current job, hosting The Amber Ruffin Show on Peacock.
Stephen Colbert’s picks for Daily Show hosts make sense
Reports indicate that The Daily Show could pivot to a new format after Trevor Noah leaves. The show may be turned over to co-hosts, similar to how “Weekend Update” has operated on Saturday Night Live for the better part of two decades.
If that’s the case, it would be hard to find a better combination than Roy Wood, Jr. and Jessica Williams. Both know how The Daily Show operates, yet both have a unique voice that would help make the show their own.
Wood has said he’d be willing to consider it if he was offered the job. Bringing in Williams would likely be a tall order for Comedy Central.
The actress has stayed busy since leaving The Daily Show in 2016. In addition to creating 2 Dope Queens, she’s appeared in two Fantastic Beasts movies. In April, she began filming the Apple TV+ series Shrinking. Williams is a main part of a cast led by Jason Segel and Harrison Ford.
