Nobody seems to go after First Lady Melania Trump like Stephen Colbert. The latest example comes after news that she called for a White House staffer to be fired.

Listen, being the first lady of the United States is probably a very, very stressful job. There is a lot of pressure and everyone in the country scrutinizes every word, outfit, and action the president’s spouse chooses. It is probably especially stressful for someone like Melania Trump who likely never wanted to be in the role.

However, the First Lady should know by now that she is under increased scrutiny just by being married to President Donald Trump. And when everyone pays such close attention, caution should be exercised. So perhaps don’t plagiarize your predecessor when everyone pores over every word. Don’t wear a jacket suggesting you don’t care about anything.

Mrs. Trump had people questioning her again this week when it was reported that she had her husband fire White House aide Mira Ricardel. It led some to question the influence of Mrs. Trump over her husband especially when it came to staffers not directly assigned to the First Lady.

We’ve seen before that if there is ever a chance to make a mockery out of Melania Trump, you can bet that Stephen Colbert will take it. Not long ago he poked fun at her after she claimed she was “the most bullied person in the world.”  So when the news broke about the firing, Colbert called in friend Laura Benanti for another exclusive interview with “Melania Trump.”

Colbert uses the bit to hit on one of his favorite things with Mrs. Trump and that is the ridiculous claim that she intended to end bullying. Bullying has become a standard part of politics during her husband’s time in office. And the way in which she had Ricardel fired shows that no member of the Trump family is worried about being a bully.

Colbert may be giving Melania a little too much credit by suggesting this is all part of a master plan to get herself removed from the White House. If the Stormy Daniels news didn’t get Mrs. Trump to bail, then nothing will.

Is it having Melania Trump’s doppelganger Laura Benanti at his disposal that makes Colbert continually go after the First Lady? Or does he genuinely believe she deserves to be mocked while other hosts only occasionally tease her while focusing more on other members of Trump’s administration. It’s probably a little bit of both but Mrs. Trump has to try to stop giving him so much material. Honestly, that doesn’t seem likely.
