Johnny Depp came onto Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote the new Pirates of the Caribbean film, and spoke about making a surprise appearance at Disneyland.

Imagine how awesome this must have been for those lucky fans at Disneyland!

Fans of Captain Jack Sparrow have to be ecstatic about the new Pirates of the Caribbean film. Set to premiere on May 26, we’re fast approaching seeing Johnny Depp sailing back onto the big screen. Captain Jack is back!

To promote the film, Depp came onto Jimmy Kimmel’s show last night. During the interview, Kimmel asks Depp about a recent incident in which Depp surprised fans by showing up as Captain Jack on a ride. A video of this has since went viral, seen by over a million people since being uploaded.

This is incredibly cool.

From the fans’ point-of-view, we can relate to how awesome this would be. Even if you’re not the type to get starstruck, having the real Captain Jack show up on your ride would be something you’d never forget. But what was this like from Johnny’s point-of-view?

Depp tells Kimmel that when they showed him the ride beforehand, he got the idea to pretend to be an animatronic. Then when the riders’ boat (this is a water ride) came close enough, Depp would suddenly burst into character. It was a sound plan, right?

Well, as seen in the video above, some people did freak out upon seeing the real Johnny. But as Depp reveals to Kimmel, not everyone knew he was real. “Even speaking to them specifically, ‘You, with the purple shirt, and the thing and the ears and all,’ right? Nothing,” Depp says, noting the lack of reaction in some riders. Mimicking them, Depp shows how they just recorded him with their cell phones, remaining stone-faced.

It seems they thought it was just a part of the ride, or as Depp says, “the cheapest animatronic I’ve ever seen.” You can watch it for yourself below.
