12. Maher shows what sidewalk psychics and the GOP have in common

On an episode of Real Time, Bill Maher talks about what he calls the “sunk cost fallacy”. It’s what links together religion, sidewalk psychics, and the GOP. To put it in a nutshell, this refers to the idea that “the more you sink money into something, the more you have to believe it”. In other words, if you’ve invested tons of money into something, you will always believe in it even after blatant evidence proves it wrong.

Take for example the story of a sidewalk psychic who took some gullible person to the cleaners. The psychic had charged over $700,000 dollars in readings to one particular person. This got the supposed mind-reader arrested, but this is just one of many examples of someone sticking with something because of all the money they were investing into it.

That seems a lot like the GOP, but here’s where they differ. Maher jokes that at least psychics are right part of the time, while Republicans are not. Trickle down economics has never worked, yet to this day Republican voters buy into the notion that it does. It’s nothing more than a lie rich conservatives tell voters to keep their own offshore bank accounts padded.
