Taylor Swift gave Stephen Colbert advice on how to handle his talk show ending

On Dec. 11, 2025, the YouTube channel for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert uploaded a clip from the appearance of a superstar on that show, Taylor Swift. During the discussion contained in that video, Colbert brought up the fact that Swift had recently wrapped her "Eras Tour after being on the road for two years. Colbert then discussed the fact that he'd been hosting a talk show consistently for 21 years.

At that point in the conversation, Colbert mentioned that Swift's stopping her tour must have been a big change for her. Then, Colbert asked Swift for her advice on how he should handle the fact that he will soon no longer be a talk show host after so many years.

To Swift's credit, the pop megastar was humble enough that she began her response by stating that she couldn't understand exactly what Colbert would be going through. However, Swift then gave Colbert extremely valuable advice on how she suggested he handle going from being so busy to his career suddenly slowing down.

“I mean, for this specific situation, no... But I can sort of see from afar that I think that I can speak for both of us to say that we're both very passionate, hyperactive people. Right? So it's like a, let's not say workaholic. Let's just say we're passionate, hyperactive people. So, it's like I think that when I take time off, it's always just like I can't slow down the fact that I need to get up and do a lot of things today. But I can change what those things are. I can figure out how to chill out, but I'm never going to be a chill person. ”

After explaining that she understands that she couldn't go from touring to doing nothing, Swift went on to give some examples of how she has handled things when she was suddenly off the road.

“What you can do is, I became like, ‘I'm bread girl now.’ Or I'm like, ‘You know, this isn't going to cross stitch itself.’ Do you know what I mean? Hobbies are kind of incredible. And, you love to do a million things to prepare for this [talk show] and you give everything to the people that watch your show. [Now,] you can give that to your friends and family, your community.”

Of course, Colbert is known for his sense of humor. As a result, it shouldn't surprise anyone that the talk show host responded to Swift's sage advice by cracking a joke. In response to the idea that he could dedicate his time to his friends and family, Colbert joked that the problem with that is that his loved ones don't chant his name as his crowd has done for years.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on CBS.
