Stephen Colbert calls Trump's nomination 'deeply psychotically weird'
By Matt Moore
Donald Trump is officially the 2024 Republican nominee for president following the Republican National Convention's conclusion. And while this was by no means a surprise, it's still "deeply psychotically weird" according to Stephen Colbert.
Despite challenges from the likes of Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley, the GOP nomination was always going to go to Donald Trump. The countless criminal charges against him didn't slow him down, nor did his record in office.
So the fact that Donald Trump is once again the GOP nominee put Stephen Colbert in some type of mood on Thursday night. The Late Show went live following the RNC and Colbert unleashed on the Republican Party.
"The thing is, none of this is normal," he began his monologue. "It's deeply psychotically weird that this is happening at all."
Colbert laid out his case for why, citing Trump's role in the January 6 insurrection, two impeachments, multiple indictments, liability for sexual assault, and 34 felony convictions. Despite all that, Colbert said that the GOP is desperate for voters to forget it all.
Colbert's monologue echoed many of the same sentiments Seth Meyers expressed in "A Closer Look" on the same night. Both late-night TV hosts blasted Republicans for lying about Trump's record and acting as if the Trump presidency was the peak of civilization.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tried to give the Republican National Convention some credit. Colbert highlighted some of the crowd shots that he called "normal" convention stuff. But by no means was Colbert ready to let the RNC off the hook after Trump's name was in lights and the former president gave a rambling speech in front of an image depicting the White House.
It was just another example of the "weird" vibe Colbert observed at the RNC. And while the upcoming Democratic National Convention probably won't be "psychotic," it should have an atmosphere that catches Colbert's attention.
