Seth Meyers: A Closer Look at RNC lies about Trump's record
By Matt Moore
The Republican National Convention wrapped up on Thursday night with Donald Trump accepting the party's nomination for president. But as Seth Meyers highlighted in "A Closer Look," it also ended days of "brazen" lies about Trump's record.
Late-night TV was all over the RNC, with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Daily Show going live after each night. Late Night with Seth Meyers kept pace as well, albeit not in real time.
But that gave Meyers and his staff a little more time to take a deep dive into each speech from the RNC. And the NBC show concluded that the MAGA world just couldn't help itself when it came to lying about Donald Trump's record.
"A Closer Look" on Thursday opened up with one GOP personality after another claiming that under Donald Trump, the U.S. economy was booming. "Yes, we all remember the halcyon days of 2020, when the economy was soaring, and toilet paper was plentiful, and we weren't all wearing T-shirts on our faces and wiping our mail down with Clorox," Meyers responded.
Lying about Trump's accomplishments in office wasn't the only thing that irritated Seth Meyers. The Late Night host also called out Republicans who flip-flopped on supporting Trump.
Case in point: Nikki Haley. The one-time candidate for the GOP nomination called Trump diminished and unhinged. Yet as Meyers reminded his audience, she gave Trump her full endorsement during the RNC. The comedian wasn't exactly surprised since he predicted Haley's turn back in January.
J.D. Vance also got the "Closer Look" treatment as Meyers called out the VP candidate for his comments about Trump. Now, Vance is applauding the "beauty" and "luxury" associated with the Trump brand.
So what does Seth Meyers think about all of this? "But that transformation is a microcosm of the Trumpification of the GOP," he said. "[Trump] is very much an outgrowth of decades of reactionary politics and many other systemic failures. But he did help shape the party into a cult of personality by instituting a policy of ritual humiliation obedience."
Meyers concluded by claiming that the GOP has no platform or policies. Instead, they have no choice but to lie about Donald Trump's record. However, Late Night and "A Closer Look" aren't letting them off that easy.
