Stephen Colbert echoed the sentiment of many in response to Judge Aileen Cannon dismissing the classified documents case against Donald Trump. The Late Show host categorized the decision as "fragrant bull crap."

Judge Cannon tossed out the case alleging Trump illegally retained classified documents after leaving the White House. A raid at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence retrieved multiple boxes stored in bathrooms and empty ballrooms.

But according to Judge Cannon, special counsel Jack Smith’s appointment violated the Appointments Clause of the Constitution. Legal scholars quickly poked holes in Cannon's assessment, adding more questions about the Trump-appointed judge's possible bias.

Stephen Colbert joined in that chorus on Monday night during his live Late Show following the Republican National Convention. "That is fragrant bull crap," Colbert declared. "Aileen Cannon is one of the most woefully unqualified, biased...," the comedian continued before cutting himself off.

Returning to the theme of "toning down the rhetoric" in the aftermath of an assassination attempt on Trump, Colbert tried to check himself. Holding a puppy, Colbert ended his rant by simply referring to Cannon as a "fellow American."

But the Late Show host wasn't done with the story. According to Colbert, the judge accepted a flimsy argument to dismiss the case because she knows Trump is guilty. The former president also knows he's guilty, claimed Colbert.

Colbert pointed to reports that Trump ordered boxes to be moved after receiving a subpoena in the case. The comedian also reminded his audience that Trump suggested his lawyers destroy the subpoena.

Late-night TV has been on Judge Cannon from the start. While hosts like Colbert saw things as an open-and-shut case, they warned that Cannon's allegiance to Trump would muddy the waters. Now, those muddy waters have turned to "fragrant bull crap" in the mind of Stephen Colbert.
