The Late Show with Stephen Colbert returned on Tuesday night after a three-week hiatus. Stephen Colbert wasted no time jumping into the biggest story: Judge Aileen Cannon’s decision to appoint a special master to review documents seized from Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property.

Granting a special master delays any investigations into whether or not Trump acted inappropriately by removing documents from the White House. Most legal experts and pundits were shocked by Judge Cannon’s decision to allow a special master to review the evidence and separate what was relevant to the case from what was not.

In typical Colbert fashion, his monologue questioned what Donald Trump would do with that extra time. The late-night TV host also asked why Judge Cannon gave Trump special treatment that likely wouldn’t be afforded to anyone else.

Stephen Colbert calls Judge Cannon’s special master decision ‘bonkers’

Stephen Colbert jokingly suggested that Donald Trump and his legal team would use the delay caused by a special master’s review to shred documents. Given Trump’s history, maybe it’s more likely that he flushes some files down the toilet.

The comedian challenged Judge Cannon’s decision that the special master should look for any documents covered by executive privilege. Colbert reminded the judge that Donald Trump is no longer president and therefore shouldn’t get such protections.

Colbert proved he wasn’t alone in calling Judge Cannon’s special master decision “bonkers.” The Late Show cut together a montage of legal experts bashing the logic behind Judge Cannon’s decision.

On top of it all, Colbert had one more point to make: Donald Trump appointed the judge and confirmed her days after the 2020 election to the jurisdiction where the alleged violations took place. So maybe, in the end, Colbert admits it’s not that hard to see how special treatment could happen.
