Jon Stewart's 3 best reactions to Kamala Harris' DNC speech
By Matt Moore
Both the Democratic National Convention and The Daily Show wrapped up its programming from Chicago on Thursday night. Moments after Vice President Kamala Harris delivered her speech officially accepting the Democratic nomination, Jon Stewart gave his live reaction.
All week, The Daily Show has been going live after the DNC. Thursday night finally gave the spotlight to Jon Stewart, and the veteran late-night TV host delivered in much the same way Harris delivered for her supporters.
Stewart spoke for more than 20 minutes during his monologue on Thursday night. It covered the entire convention, including speakers, viral moments, and all that speculation about a surprise guest. But it was during his reaction to Kamala Harris' speech that Stewart delivered three of his best moments.
Jon Stewart jokes that we finally got to meet 'Communist Kamala'
Kamala Harris used her speech to (re)introduce herself to the American public. She reflected on her childhood, early career, and tenure as vice president.
Stewart mockingly called it an introduction to "Communist Kamala," a reference to how Donald Trump and his supporters have attempted to frame Harris.
The comedian quickly pointed out how Harris' broad calls for safety and equality aren't exactly in the mold of Joseph Stalin or any other communist. Stewart easily showed how the GOP-created boogeyman is nothing more than pure imagination.
Jon Stewart mocks Donald Trump's social media spiral during Kamala Harris' speech
Donald Trump played a major role in Kamala Harris' speech on the final night of the Democratic National Convention. So it's no surprise that the former president also gave Jon Stewart some of his best material on Thursday night.
Harris warned the audience of the inherent danger of a second Trump presidency. Her speech also pushed back on the narrative Trump has attempted to create about her.
"If I was Donald Trump right now," Stewart said, "I'd probably just be tweeting nonsensical s*** to distract from the fact that she doesn't faintly resemble the caricature that's been painted."
And as Stewart revealed, that's exactly what Donald Trump did. The Daily Show live audience roared in laughter as Stewart flashed Trump's posts on the screen, including an all-caps "WHERE'S HUNTER?"
Jon Stewart highlights the importance of swing states
Since beginning her campaign, Kamala Harris has made a point to visit crucial swing states like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. The vice president is in a time crunch, so her travel needs to be strategic.
Jon Stewart clearly understands this and called it out at the top of his monologue. Vice President Harris' speech at the DNC reflected on how often she moved as a child, including to places like Illinois and Wisconsin.
"Just name swing states," Stewart deadpanned in response. "Just say that you moved to swing states. That you moved to Michigan, to Georgia, you moved to Arizona. Just make it up."
Stewart's riff immediately got a big response from the audience. Any political speech has a level of pandering involved; Stewart just wants Harris to embrace it and take it to another level considering what's at stake.
