Stephen Colbert thanks Congress for not expelling George Santos

Stephen Colbert’s monologue on Thursday night expressed gratitude regarding an unlikely subject. The Late Show host thanked Congress for voting not to kick out Representative George Santos.

The controversial New York congressman survived a vote to remove him from office. Instead, Republicans and a group of Democrats chose to wait until at least the criminal trial and House Ethics Committee investigation surrounding Santos ends.

Stephen Colbert offered his response on Thursday night’s episode of The Late Show. The comedian’s monologue didn’t criticize Democrats or call out the hypocrisy of Republicans. Instead, Colbert said “thank you” to all those who voted to keep George Santos around.

“Thank you,” Colbert said. “I need this. He may be a crazy criminal, but compared to all the other criminals, he’s fine.”

However, Colbert was willing to play both sides if only for comedic effect. “That being said, boo!” he added. But the comedian added in one more “thank you” as one of his favorite punching bags sticks around.

Stephen Colbert mocks George Santos for his response to the House vote

George Santos has proven that he can’t stay away from the spotlight. It doesn’t matter what he does or says to get the attention. That includes the attention of late-night TV, social media, and more.

So when Santos decided to celebrate surviving the House of Representatives vote, he did so by posting a picture of himself wearing a crown along with a quote from The Wire‘s Omar.

Stephen Colbert’s monologue took the opportunity to knock Santos down a peg and remind the congressman he isn’t as cool as he thinks.

“I gotta say, in that crown, he doesn’t look like a drug lord,” Colbert teased. “He looks like the Burger King.”

George Santos remaining in Congress may not have been what everyone wanted. But on the bright side, it gives Stephen Colbert’s monologue material that isn’t about the real crazy criminals.
