John Boehner rips Ted Cruz, dishes on McConnell, Obama to Colbert
By Matt Moore
Former Speaker of the House John Boehner appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday night. In addition to promoting his new memoir On the House, Boehner shared his candid thoughts on several politicians.
It was an interesting conversation between Stephen Colbert and John Boehner. As we noted in our preview, Boehner wasn’t trying to change anyone’s opinion of him and Colbert was willing to ask any question. Perhaps some would be disappointed that Colbert didn’t push a little harder when discussing the differences between Democrats and Republicans when it comes to extremism and using the media.
Colbert closed out the interview with a speed round and asked Boehner his thoughts on a number of politicians. The former Speaker’s thoughts on Senator Ted Cruz are well known and Colbert gave Boehner another chance to take a shot at Cruz.

John Boehner joins in late night TV’s constant dumping on Senator Ted Cruz
John Boehner had some fine, normal things to say about a few of his former colleagues. Former Vice President Mike Pence, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, and Senator Lindsey Graham all got solid endorsements from Boehner. For his part, Colbert met each compliment with a diss of his own.
On former President Barack Obama, Boehner said Obama was not his cup of tea but the two got along well. Perhaps in a different interview or with more time, Colbert could drill down on the Boehner-Obama relationship but there were bigger fish to fry.
Former President Donald Trump was described as “a little crazy” despite Boehner acknowledging that he voted for Trump. Senator Mitch McConnell was dubbed “Stealth Vader” but that was nothing compared to the language Boehner used to describe Sen. Ted Cruz:
"Lucifer in the flesh. The most miserable son of a [expletive] I ever had to deal with."
Colbert was delighted to hear Boehner’s honest opinion of the Senator and raised his glass in response. Boehner slam of Cruz means he would fit right in next to Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, and the other late night TV hosts who continue to ridicule Cruz at every opportunity.
