The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is starting its week off in a big way. Former Speaker of the House John Boehner will go one-on-one with Stephen Colbert.

Boehner, a Republican from Ohio, served as Speaker of the House from 2011 to 2015. His tenure was marked by frequent clashes with President Barack Obama over issues related to healthcare, government funding, and more.

He resigned ahead of the 2016 presidential election and retired from public office. Now Boehner is back in the news thanks to the release of his memoir On the House: A Washington Memoir.

Boehner’s book tour will bring him to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tonight where his conversation with Stephen Colbert is sure to make headlines. Stephen Colbert has a history of criticizing the former Speaker and effectively celebrated Boehner’s resignation when it was announced:

What to expect from John Boehner on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

It will be interesting to see what kind of reception John Boehner gets from Stephen Colbert. Colbert is always a gracious host and wants his guests to feel welcomed. But he’s also demonstrated a willingness to ask tough questions on uncomfortable topics.

Expect Colbert to walk that line tonight. He’ll no doubt want Boehner to reconcile with his legacy and what, if any, role he played in the evolution of American politics. Sometimes controversial politicians use these book tours and late night TV appearances to rehabilitate their public image. However, Boehner seems content with where he is right now so it’s unlikely he’ll come on The Late Show looking to change anyone’s mind about his political career.

Colbert will likely want to know Boehner’s take on the current state of Congress. The Capitol insurrection could come up as Colbert seeks Boehner’s opinion on the GOP lawmakers who helped push the Big Lie that led to the attack.

Excerpts from On the House reveal that Boehner is not shy about naming names when it comes to his former colleagues. Disparaging comments about Texas Senator Ted Cruz have received media attention. Colbert is always willing to pile on Cruz so don’t be surprised if the interview gets deeper into why Boehner dislikes Cruz so much.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs tonight at 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS. You can watch on Paramount+ or on FuboTV. Sign up now for a free seven-day trial.
