Chris Christie is live with Stephen Colbert tonight: What to watch for

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert welcomes former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie tonight
The Republican National Convention wraps up tonight and with it the live coverage from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The CBS late-night show will welcome former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to the show.
The RNC coverage on The Late Show has been interesting to say the least. Things started off as expected, with Stephen Colbert describe night one as the GOP’s descent into full cult status. He followed that up by mocking Eric Trump and the “slow and boring” production. The tone changed for night three as Colbert admitted he did not watch the RNC out of protest and to highlight the more pressing issues facing the country.
Obviously those problems weren’t miraculously solved today. But there’s a good chance that Colbert will tune in tonight. President Donald Trump will give his speech accepting the Republican nomination, so the Late Show host will probably want to deliver a rebuttal.
And then there is Colbert’s guest. He’ll chat with former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie so expect Colbert to come prepared knowing that Christie will have tuned in to the RNC.
What should fans expect from Stephen Colbert’s interview with Chris Christie?
Chris Christie is a friend of The Late Show and has been called in before for live shows. Last year he joined Stephen Colbert for a special episode following the Democratic presidential debate.
Fans know that there is some type of chemistry between Christie and Colbert and mutual respect despite their opposing views. Those opposing views will be front and center tonight when The Late Show goes live but don’t expect a screaming match to breakout over Zoom.
But fans should expect to see Colbert press Christie on President Trump’s behavior and the state of the Republican Party. Christie has voiced his support for the RNC through the first three nights so it will be up to him to explain to Colbert why the late-night host has it all wrong.
Christie has criticized President Trump about the RNC message and in the past while talking with Colbert. Whether or not the tequila from this clip had anything to do with that is anybody’s guess.
Based on the attitude Colbert displayed last night on The Late Show, he may not be in the mood to buddy around with Christie. The host drew a straight line between President Trump’s rhetoric and the shooting of protestors in Wisconsin. And Colbert will never forgive the White House for its botched response to the pandemic.
It won’t be easy for Christie to defend the president on either of those topics. Christie can say that he’s not involved in the administration but Colbert has proven to be just as ruthless towards President Trump’s supporters and enablers.
It will be interesting to see how the conversation between the two goes without a studio audience. Christie has always been aware that the Late Show audience is not on his side and he’s tried to win them over. On the other side, Colbert has known that the right comeback could elicit applause from his audience. Tonight, it will just be the two going one-on-one over some sensitive topics.
