Stephen Colbert: Eric Trump leads slow and boring Republican National Convention
By Matt Moore
Stephen Colbert recapped night two of the Republican National Convention
Stop us if you’ve heard this one before but Stephen Colbert thinks President Donald Trump lied to the American people. We were promised an uplifting and showstopping Republican National Convention. Instead, night two was “slow and boring” according to Colbert’s monologue.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was once again live last night on CBS following the Republican National Convention. The night before, Colbert described the opening as a gloomy, dark affair in which the GOP went full cult.
It wasn’t exactly a bounce-back night on Tuesday in the eyes of Colbert. Despite speeches from Team Trump favorites like First Lady Melania Trump, Eric Trump, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the Late Show described the event as rudderless and uninspiring.
President Trump’s reality television background and love of ratings don’t look like it will be enough to save the RNC. Colbert explained why in his monologue:
Stephen Colbert gave special attention to President Trump’s son, Eric Trump
It wasn’t going to be easy to top the one-two punch of Kimberly Guilfoyle and Donald Trump, Jr. from night one of the Republican National Convention. Guilfoyle’s speech has a good chance of being more memorable than President Trump when he accepts the nomination.
Perhaps the speakers on Tuesday night were worried about being mocked or turned into a meme. That could explain why Stephen Colbert found the night so slow and boring. But the comedian still managed to find amusement in the form of Eric Trump.
The president’s son delivered a speech that was littered with falsehoods. Colbert was less interested in correcting those and more inclined to mock Eric Trump, his appearance, and his shaky relationship with his father.
Eric Trump has been on The Late Show‘s radar for some time now. Back in 2017, Colbert dedicated part of his monologue to exposing Trump’s charity scam. Somehow that didn’t prevent Trump from speaking at the RNC and delivering a message on why another four years of his family is the best thing for America.
Colbert isn’t holding his breath that the Republican National Convention will recover on night three. The keynote speaker will be Vice President Mike Pence who may be the definition of “slow and boring.”
