David Spade is back hosting a late-night television show starting tonight

Don’t call it a comeback. David Spade is returning to host a late-night television show starting tonight but the comedian never really left.

Spade starts a two-night run as guest host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! starting tonight. He’s the latest guest host to come to the ABC late-night show this summer while host Jimmy Kimmel enjoys the remainder of his vacation.

Tonight, Spade will interview Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy. The musical guest will be Elle King. Spade returns on Tuesday night to chat with his The Wrong Missy co-star Lauren Lapkus followed by a performance from the Avett Brothers.

Spade will be following a list of Jimmy Kimmel Live! guest hosts who have been on balance a success. Anthony Anderson, Sarah Cooper, and Iliza Shlesinger have especially stood out with strong performances.

David Spade returns to late-night after his Comedy Central gig was cut short

From July 2019 to March 2020, David Spade hosted Lights Out with David Spade on Comedy Central. The network shut down production due to the novel coronavirus pandemic and then announced it would not be renewed for a second season. It was a head-scratching decision and one that ultimately was probably made prematurely.

Comedy Central indicated it would be open to moving Lights Out to another network. In the meantime, Spade has continued to write and produce monologues released via his YouTube channel.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! could not have picked anyone better to fill in as guest host. It’s why Spade was on our wish list for hosts this summer along with Sarah Cooper. Few other people in entertainment have the skillset of Spade and can bring it to a late-night show. Those that do, already have their own show.

Anytime David Spade and late-night television come up, it’s worth mentioning that he is the best storyteller in the game. It’s impossible to watch one interview clip without going down a rabbit hole of videos that has you listening to Spade talk about everything from being robbed to going to secret Prince shows.

Spade’s return to the late-night spotlight tonight will remind fans of this. It will also remind fans that Lights Out was given a fair shot and that taking Spade off the air was a mistake. There is a reason late-night shows want Spade as a guest and there is a reason Jimmy Kimmel Live! wanted Spade back as a guest host.

Spade filled in for Kimmel back in 2017. The most memorable moment was the awkward interview with director Guy Ritchie though it was no fault of Spade’s. Ritchie’s vibe actually worked in Spade’s favor as it made for a more entertaining interview than if things were more typical. Spade ultimately got the last laugh when he recounted the interaction the next time he was on Kimmel.
