Kerry Washington brings dad jokes to Jimmy Kimmel Live
By Matt Moore
Kerry Washington was the latest star to fill in as host of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
As the star of Scandal and a speaker at the Democratic National Convention, Kerry Washington was expected to have a political tilt to her monologue as guest host last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Instead, the actress brought out the dad jokes with a little help from her own father.
Washington is the latest special guest to take over Jimmy Kimmel Live! while Jimmy Kimmel enjoys the last few weeks of his summer vacation. She follows other guest hosts like Anthony Anderson, Billy Eichner, Dua Lipa, and Sarah Cooper who have done an excellent job of keeping the late-night show going.
On Wednesday night, Washington is set to be the emcee for night three of the Democratic National Convention. She encouraged her Jimmy Kimmel Live! audience to vote this Nov. and get involved in the political process.
However, that was about the extent of her political musings in Monday night’s monologue. It only made Washington’s monologue stand out more compared to the rest of late-night, which spent time reacting to night one of the DNC as well as President Donald Trump’s ongoing post office attacks.
But Washington did draw inspiration from Jimmy Kimmel by making the show a family affair. The actress called in her father Earl Washington to help add some dad jokes to her monologue in what was a feel-good moment.
Kerry Washington returns to host Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night
Even Earl Washington’s dad jokes couldn’t leave politics out. Just don’t expect his punchlines about AOC or “kale-in voting” to be hijacked by Stephen Colbert or Seth Meyers anytime soon. Still, it was impossible not to smile watching Mr. Washington help out Kerry Washington with her monologue.
Fans of Washington in Little Fires Everywhere will definitely want to check out her interview with co-star Reese Witherspoon. The two talked about their Hulu series as well as their kids and preparing for the Emmys.
If you liked Kerry Washington as a late-night host then you’re in luck. She’ll be back tonight to host Jimmy Kimmel Live! once again. Her guest will be politician Stacy Abrams. Tune in to ABC at 11:35 PM ET to catch the show.
