Will Last Week Tonight with John Oliver return tonight?
Almost all of late-night television returned with new episodes this past week. Will Last Week Tonight with John Oliver join them or remain on the shelf?
Last Sunday, fans tuned in only to see a rerun of Last Week Tonight. No doubt a tough way to end the weekend for late-night audiences. But thankfully, the return of shows like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Late Late Show with James Corden helped.
So what will Last Week Tonight with John Oliver do tonight? Get back on schedule like or will it be another repeat performance?
You’re in luck, fans: there will be a brand new episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver tonight on HBO. But what will be the main story?
What should Last Week Tonight with John Oliver fans expect to see?
The last time John Oliver was on air with a new episode, he gave his audience a much-needed history lesson. Unlike President Donald Trump’s World War II lesson, Oliver’s was accurate and provided some insight into how U.S. classrooms can address slavery and the country’s racial history.
So what will tonight’s main story be all about? It has been a month since Last Week Tonight has addressed the novel coronavirus pandemic. With schools set to reopen for in-person learning in some states, now may be a good time to look at COVID-19 from that angle.
Mail-in voting and the U.S. Postal Service remain hot topics in the news. Back in May, Oliver unpacked postal voting and broke down the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, which is partly responsible for the USPS funding issues at the center of the debate. Oliver may provide an update on both of these topics but its more likely that he’ll point viewers back to these old clips and let them speak for themselves.
Last Week Tonight could choose to profile Senator Kamala Harris ahead of the Democratic National Convention. Chances are that Sen. Harris would receive slightly better treatment than current Vice President Mike Pence received back in 2018.
Or if Oliver wants to dive back into the world of conspiracy theories, there is reason to do it now. There has been a noticeable uptick in congressional candidates with a history of pushing conspiracy theories from QAnon.
The most likely scenario? John Oliver introduces a topic that nobody anticipated but captures their attention. Last Week Tonight fans always expect the unexpected.
