Stephen Colbert goes one-on-one with Mary Trump tonight: What to expect
By Matt Moore
Stephen Colbert talks with author Mary Trump on tonight’s Late Show
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert fans will not want to miss tonight’s episode. It could be the last time a member of the Trump family agrees to an interview with Stephen Colbert as he chats with Mary Trump.
Mary Trump is out promoting her book Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the Most Dangerous Man in the World. As the niece of President Donald Trump, she has unique insight into the president’s private life and the factors that made him the man he is today.
Sales of the book have been setting record thanks in part to President Trump’s efforts to block its publication. If he’s already that angry about Too Much and Never Enough, we can only imagine how upset he’ll be to see it promoted by his top critic in late night television.
The biggest takeaways from the book have already been discussed so it is unlikely that Stephen Colbert will get any new information from Mary Trump that hasn’t been covered. But by no means does that mean tonight’s interview can be skipped.
Mary Trump will see why Stephen Colbert is the best interviewer in late night
Mary Trump’s appearance on The Late Show comes just a few weeks after another bombshell book against the president was front and center on the CBS show. Former National Security Adviser John Bolton discussed The Room Where It Happened with Colbert during his tour to plug the memoir.
In that interview, Colbert did not hold back in challenging Bolton for joining the Trump administration in the first place and suggesting that President Trump could be tamed and molded into a thoughtful, informed leader.
Audiences should expect a similar approach by Colbert tonight. Things won’t be as contentious given the scathing criticism Mary Trump levels against her uncle in Too Much and Never Enough. Nobody will be looking to defend President Trump or excuse his actions.
Instead, Colbert will probably be just as tenacious in hammering home the argument that President Trump isn’t fit for office. A clinical psychologist, Mary Trump outlines how Donald Trump’s relationship with his father Fred Trump is behind much of the narcissistic and corrupt behavior that Colbert calls out nightly on The Late Show.
Colbert’s skills as an interviewer should make it easy for Mary Trump to open up and share as much from her book and her life as possible. Look for Colbert to set up Trump to give answers that injure the president’s pride and paint him as unfit for office.
