The Daily Show wants to award the best performance in fake outrage

There has been no shortage of bizarre and ridiculous headlines that have come as a result of the political climate of the past few years. The current battle over Goya Foods may be near the top when it comes to the most absurd stories. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah is making it clear that the late night show agrees.

The Goya story all began when the company’s chief executive officer Robert Unanue expressed his support for President Donald Trump during a White House event. It resulted in a call to boycott Goya from some on the left. Always one to retaliate, Team Trump had an answer. Ivanka Trump posed with a can of Goya black beans followed by President Trump posting an image of Goya products covering his Oval Office desk.

The Trump administration was condemned for endorsing a private company in what may have been an illegal act. On the other side, those calling for the boycott have been criticized for overreacting and attacking Goya.

Among those expressing shock and anger over the Goya boycott are the folks at Fox News. Hosts and guests and the cable network have not held back when it comes to outrage over the apparent assault on Goya. The Daily Show couldn’t decide whose fake outrage performance was the best but it did submit nominations for your consideration:

Fox News continues to be a favorite target for The Daily Show

It should be no surprise to see Jeanine Pirro and Laura Ingraham receiving nominations for an Outragee. The duo is consistently out front when it comes to calling out the “radical left” or predicting the end of American society as we know it. But when these declarations are in response to a boycott on Goya foods, they are even easier for The Daily Show to ridicule.

Then there is Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida. Nobody has made a stronger push for Outragee consideration over the past couple of years than Rep. Gaetz. He has not been shy about putting on a performance whether on Fox News or on the House floor.

The “64th Annual Outragees” is the latest chapter in The Daily Show‘s long-running effort to discredit, deride, and laugh at Fox News. Things have only ramped up in the Trump era as Fox News has developed an impressive influence over the White House.

The Goya boycott is among the strangest and most unpredictable storylines to come up in recent memory. That is saying a lot for Fox News and its history of exaggerating and overreacting to just about anything. Thankfully, The Daily Show continues to call it out while entertaining fans.
