Should Real Time with Bill Maher fans expect to see a brand new episode tonight on HBO?

Two major stories dominated headlines this week as Super Tuesday narrowed the Democratic field of candidates and the coronavirus continued to put the public on edge. Together, they offer a lot to discuss for a show like Real Time with Bill Maher.

Late night television fans have been hearing about these topics night after night. Late Night with Seth Meyers has been especially critical of how the White House has responded to the coronavirus outbreak. On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Senator Elizabeth Warren got a fond farewell as the focus shifts to Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden.

Real Time with Bill Maher has always served as a weekly roundup of these topics and more. The show also has the benefit of the most eclectic collection of guests found anywhere in late night.

So with these two major developing stories making waves, what can Real Time fans expect tonight? The answer: a brand new episode. Here’s the breakdown of tonight’s show:

Top-of-show

Real Time with Bill Maher starts off by welcoming a newcomer to the show. Election expert Rachel Bitecofer is the top-of-show guest.

Bitecofer covers election data and analysis for the Niskanen Center, a moderate think tank dedicated to policymaking. She is known for her election predictions and has posted her thoughts on why a Democrat should win the electoral college in 2020.

Bill Maher should ask Bitecofer to analyze the Super Tuesday results and what data on voter demographics and turnout can tell us about the general election. If you’re wondering why your preferred candidate did or did not perform well, Bitecofer may have the answer.

Mid-show interview

The mid-show interview will feature another first-timer. Actor Brian Cox will sit down for an interview with Maher.

Cox can currently be seen in the HBO series Succession. He plays  Logan Roy, the founder of media and entertainment conglomerate and patriarch of a family set on inheriting his empire. Cox is coming of a Golden Globe win for his performance. The third season of the critically-acclaimed series is set to begin shooting in April.

Given how critical Maher has been about the influence of media companies in politics, he may ask Cox to reflect on what he’s learned by playing Logan Roy.  Cox has also been vocal about his political views for his native Scotland and could very well touch on that topic, too.

The panel

As usual, the Real Time with Bill Maher panel will feature three unique voices who will add to the night’s discussions. All three panel guests are familiar faces to Real Time fans.

Ross Douthat is a columnist for The New York Times. His book The Decadent Society: How We Became the Victims of Our Own Success was published last month and examines the stagnant state of society. On Twitter, Douthat has been sharing information on the coronavirus outbreak. He should have a lot to say about the week’s two biggest stories.

Caitlin Flanagan is a writer who can be read in The Atlantic among other outlets. Like Douthat, Flanagan will have insight on both topics in the news. Flanagan should be able to look at any issue from multiple angles and bring a new perspective to debate.

Entrepreneur and former White House Director of Communications Anthony Scaramucci fills out the panel. He recently announced his support of Joe Biden over President Donald Trump despite being a Republican. Scaramucci has also been critical of President Trump’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak, offering his thoughts on the economic consequences. The dynamic between Maher and Scaracmucci is always entertaining and should continue tonight.
