Late night television has been on a holiday break but when will shows return in 2020?

With just one more day left before Jan.1, we are at the end of 2019 and with it the end of the holiday season. It also means that for many people, it’s back to work as usual once 2020 starts. But what about the world of late night television?

For the most part, late night fans haven’t seen a new episode of any show since Dec. 19. Of course, nobody expected The Late Show with Stephen ColbertJimmy Kimmel Live!, or others to work through Christmas or New Year’s Day. Everyone needs time off around the holiday, especially if your job is putting together a comedy show every single night.

But even without the holidays, it has been a busy time of year for late night hosts. The Late Late Show with James Corden used guests hosts earlier this year so James Corden could film his role in The PromJimmy Kimmel Live! did something similar, calling in Brie Larson to take over while Jimmy Kimmel produced another live show for ABC. And Conan O’Brien continues to release and announce podcasts no matter what the Conan schedule looks like.

So what about the actual shows? Keep reading for a breakdown of when your favorite late night show is set to return in 2020.

Still waiting…

With New Year’s Day falling on a Wednesday this year, it’s clear that no show was coming back this week. That means that Monday, Jan. 6 would be the first date in 2020 fans could expect a new show.

But there are a few late night options that will have an extended break to kick off the new year. Those shows are The Late Late Show with James Corden and Conan.

It’s unclear if Corden is out to once again film for his upcoming movie The Prom. Or he could be staying back in England after his Gavin and Stacey Christmas special aired. Or he could be hibernating until the bad press of Cats blows over.

Conan has always had a less consistent schedule compared to other late night shows. Yet Team Coco seems to deliver more content than anyone thanks to podcasts, comedy shows, Twitch streams, and social media bits with the likes of Sona Movsesian and Jordan Schlansky. So while Conan may not be back right away, there is plenty to digest.

Coming soon…

The rest of late night seems poised to return on Jan. 6. Going by schedules in past years, shows like The Late Show with Stephen ColbertThe Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Jimmy Kimmel LIve! should all be back for the first full week of 2020.

Late Night with Seth Meyers has already announced its first guest of the new year. Senator Elizabeth Warren is scheduled for the Jan. 6 episode.

Comedy Central will also be airing new episodes of it’s late night shows. According to the network’s website, both The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Lights Out with David Spade will be new on Jan. 6.
