Pete Davidson’s Saturday Night Live absence explained
By Matt Moore
Pete Davidson was missing from Saturday Night Live’s season 45 premiere episode.
Saturday Night Live began its 45th season this past weekend. It featured familiar faces and introduced some new ones. But Pete Davidson, one of SNL’s most recognizable cast members, was nowhere to be seen.
Davidson joined the cast of Saturday Night Live during season 40. Since then, he’s made just as many headlines off the show as he has made on SNL. Regardless, he has become a popular cast member due in part to his “Weekend Update” appearances.
Yet Davidson was not on “Weekend Update” or any other sketches during the premiere hosted by Woody Harrelson. With Leslie Jones being the only cast member who did not return, some fans were wondering why Davidson was absent.
Fans were justified in any concern they had over Davidson missing the premiere. In 2018, an Instagram post from the comedian resulted in a wellness check and limited his appearance on that week’s episode of Saturday Night Live.
But we now have confirmation that it was Davidson’s busy schedule that kept him from the SNL premiere. Davidson was in Atlanta filming The Suicide Squad with director James Gunn.
It wasn’t long ago that Davidson was confirmed to be in the movie which also stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, and Viola Davis. It hasn’t yet been announced what role Davidson will have in the comic book film, a sequel/soft reboot to 2016’s Suicide Squad.
Gunn warned fans not to get too attached to the cast. The premise of the movie is that a team of villains are forced to carry out clandestine government operations or face death. So it is very likely that a number of characters won’t make it to the end of the movie.
It is hard to imagine that Davidson has a major part in The Suicide Squad that will keep him in Atlanta for long. Filming is expected to stay in Georgia for three months before moving on to Panama.
Pete Davidson missing anymore than than the next episode of Saturday Night Live this weekend would be a surprise. It would deprive SNL fans of one of their favorite cast members but it would also give The Suicide Squad fans a hint about how big a part Davidson will play in the movie.
