Pete Davidson is making the leap from Saturday Night Live to superhero movies with a role in The Suicide Squad.

Pete Davidson’s schedule is about to get very, very busy. Just weeks before Saturday Night Live kicks off its 45th season, it was announced that the comedian is the cast of the upcoming superhero movie The Suicide Squad directed by James Gunn.

The movie will be a sequel/continuation/soft reboot of 2016’s Suicide Squad which starred Margot Robbie and Will Smith. Robbie is back for The Suicide Squad this time led by director/writer James Gunn,  of Guardians of the Galaxy fame.

Plenty of other big name actors have been rumored to be involved in the film. Speculation and rumor mills are nothing new to comic book movies. But Gunn put all of that to rest with a tweet featuring a number of actors now confirmed for The Suicide Squad.

The name that late night fans are most excited to see is Pete Davidson. It is not clear who Davidson will be playing or how big of a part he will have in the movie. The Saturday Night Live star is in some good company, however.

Production is reportedly starting in just a matter of days. Filming locations include Atlanta, Georgia and Panama. Depending on how big of a role Davidson has, that could mean a lot of traveling during the Saturday Night Live season.

Gunn warned fans in his tweet not to get too attached to these names. If you’re familiar with the concept of the Suicide Squad comics, then you know many characters aren’t meant to survive for very long. Davidson could very well be among those who don’t see the end of the movie.

Davidson will be surrounded by some familiar faces on The Suicide Squad. Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and John Cena have all hosted Saturday Night Live during Davidson’s tenure.

Davidson also has two movies set for release in 2020. He has a part in the crime comedy The Jesus Rolls out at the start of the new year. Then he stars in the untitled movie directed by Judd Apatow and based on Davidson’s life, set to release in June 2020.

Given the number of movies in the genre, there has been surprisingly few Saturday Night Live cast members and alumni who have popped up in superhero movies. The one big exception of course being Iron Man himself, Robert Downey, Jr. But even with more of these movies taking on a lighter, more comedic tone (Ant-ManGuardians of the Galaxy) SNL fans haven’t seen many of their favorite stars on screen.

Pete Davidson is set to change all of that. The Suicide Squad is scheduled for an August 2021 release date.
