Jimmy Kimmel calls out Mike Pence for his Ireland trip
By Matt Moore
Jimmy Kimmel took a few extra digs at Vice President Mike Pence over his visit to Ireland.
If you’re tired of late night hosts relentlessly attacking President Donald Trump then perhaps we can interest you in a late night host relentlessly attacking…Vice President Mike Pence. That was the case on Tuesday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
Jimmy Kimmel didn’t give President Trump a pass by any stretch of the imagination. The comedian returned from a two-week break and did his best to recap the Trump stories he missed while away. Most of it centered on Trump’s handling of Hurricane Dorian, a popular topic for late night shows on Tuesday.
But Kimmel also took time out of his monologue to go after Vice President Mike Pence. Pence and his family visited Ireland and were immediately criticized for staying at a property owned by Trump despite it being 180 miles away from the seat of the Irish government in Dublin.
It is not often that Pence gets two minutes dedicated to him on late night shows. Kimmel couldn’t quite help himself however.
The jokes about Vice President Pence have been pretty consistent since he joined the ticket with Trump. Everyone is familiar with his political and religious beliefs and how they seemingly contradict everything that Trump stands for. Still, Pence is as loyal to Trump as anyone.
And that is something that Jimmy Kimmel just can’t let go. He compares Pence to a very obedient dog, willing to “stay” when and where Trump commands. The clip of Pence responding to criticism about staying at Doonbeg is bizarre and makes Kimmel think the vice president would eat dog food if told.
Each of the late night hosts seem to have a particular member of Trump’s circle that they enjoy mocking. For Stephen Colbert, it is First Lady Melania Trump. Kimmel typically focuses on Donald Trump, Jr (AKA DJTJ).
Vice President Mike Pence is typically overshadowed by his boss when it comes to late night jokes. That is, except for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. The HBO show is the go-to spot for Pence takedowns.
Based on recent events, it looks like President Donald Trump is more than happy to send Vice President Mike Pence around the world in his place. That means we could see a little more late night attention on Pence from Jimmy Kimmel and other hosts.
