The Daily Show with Trevor Noah looked at how Robert Mueller gave Democrats the lead to impeach President Donald Trump.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s statement and resignation from the Justice Department is still dominating the news. After reviewing what he said, many are now speculating on what it means moving forward. According to Trevor Noah, Democrats now carry the torch of impeachment.

The Daily Show did its best to decipher what exactly Mueller said during his statement. Both Trump supporters and Trump critics claimed that Mueller supported their argument. That has been a common occurrence since the special counsel’s investigation in Russian electoral interference began.

When the Mueller report was initially released, we saw an increased call for impeachment proceedings to be brought against President Trump. Those have only grown stronger as subpoenas are ignored and more context is given to the report’s findings.

As Trevor Noah explained, we may see Democrats heading that way. And it was Robert Mueller’s statement that laid out the path:

Noah points out that many top Democrats who were previously hesitant to discuss impeachment are now indicating that it is the only option left. It’s clear that Mueller’s press conference was seen as a positive for the Democratic Party and some of its 2020 presidential candidates.

To no one’s surprise, President Trump dismissed the idea of impeachment. He sees no grounds for such action to be taken and noted how he finds the word “impeachment” to be dirty and filthy. Considering what we’ve heard him say in the past, it’s hard to imagine he’s all that offended.

Whether or not Democrats follow what Robert Mueller hinted at depends on Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Noah does an excellent job of explaining Pelosi’s position, noting that without an open-and-shut case for impeachment, they risk losing the 2020 election before it even begins.

Pelosi addressed this very issue Thursday night while a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. You can see that interview below to hear more from the Speaker herself on the strategy moving forward:
