The Daily Show with Trevor Noah tried to make sense of Robert Mueller’s public statement from Wednesday.

Yesterday marked another chapter in the Robert Mueller investigation saga. The special counsel finally spoke publicly about his report, leaving the media and Trevor Noah to speculate and then try to discern exactly what he said.

Mueller’s statement was unexpected which led cable news anchors to guess what he could possibly have to say. Predictions ranged from explaining the details of his report to refuting Attorney General William Barr to resigning. And while Mueller ultimately did resign, he didn’t clearly state anything that left either side satisfied.

Late night has of course been following along with Mueller’s investigation from the start. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah had been tracking every development and leak from the report leading up to its release. So when Mueller finally did speak in front of cameras, Noah was tasked with reading between the lines of the special counsel’s comments. But first, he had some fun at the expense of the media:

Trevor Noah does have the benefit of not doing a live daytime show. So he will never have to fill time by speculating on what will happen in the news. This advantage makes it easy for him to mock the media for not holding on for an hour before throwing guesses at the wall to see what sticks.

Noah then goes on to do his best to translate what Mueller may have been saying. Of course, it depends on what you want to hear that determines what you think was revealed. Supporters of President Donald Trump, and Trump himself, claim that once again there was no collusion and no obstruction. Opponents of the president, and Noah, point out that if Mueller could have cleared Trump of a crime then he would have done that.

Per usual, Noah does an excellent job of deciphering things and presenting it to the audience in a simple yet entertaining fashion. During this segment he also rattled off a handful of impressions, which Last Night On will now rank:

  1. David Attenborough
  2. Minions
  3. Donald Trump
  4. Yoda

Most of late night is off this week so The Daily Show was the lone voice covering Mueller’s statement. Perhaps next week we will hear from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert or Late Night with Seth Meyers  on this issue. Stay tuned.
