Lilly Singh announces her own late night show
By Matt Moore
YouTube star Lilly Singh is coming to NBC with her own late night talk show.
There will soon be a new voice in late night. In a field already filled with talented hosts and hilarious shows, Lilly Singh is bringing her unique perspective to NBC.
Singh has become a massive star on her own through YouTube. Her “IISuperwomanII” channel boasts 14 million subscribers. She has turned that into an acting career, valuable social media portfolio, and philanthropy efforts. Now, Singh can add “late night host” to her already impressive resume.
Singh was a guest on last night’s episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon where she has been a frequent guest. Her segments have always performed extremely well thanks to her dedicated fans, natural personality, and chemistry with Fallon. Expect that to continue when A Little Late with Lilly Singh premieres on NBC.
It was a nice gesture by Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers to formally welcome Lilly Singh to the NBC family. While she already has the support of millions of fans, a little help from late night veterans like Fallon and Meyers will no doubt be helpful.
A Little Late with Lilly Singh will take over the time slot previously held by Last Call with Carson Daly. Daly recently announced he would be stepping away from late night once he hit the 2,000 episode mark. His show has been running on NBC since 2002 but Daly already has a busy schedule between Today and The Voice.
While the 1:37 AM time slot doesn’t look ideal on paper, it shouldn’t be an issue for Singh. Much of late night’s success is measured on viral clips and recordings, mean a little less emphasis is placed on live viewings. Singh already knows how to navigate YouTube and social media better than anyone else in late night so expect that to continue with clips from A Little Late.
The show is also the third new late night program announced for 2019. SyFy debuted its animated show Alien News Desk. David Spade is bringing a celebrity- and pop culture-driven show to Comedy Central. And now we have Singh bringing her signature style from YouTube to late night.
As Singh mentioned to Jimmy Fallon, it is noteworthy that her show will bring more diversity to late night and television overall. Singh also pointed out that not only is she a woman getting her own late night show, but an Indian-Canadian woman. Samantha Bee has shown that a woman can lead a successful show and Singh will look to do the same on a major network.
There doesn’t need to be any concern about late night becoming too crowded as long as there is some diversity in the content. Singh will obviously have a much different approach to news, trends, and interviews than anyone else working in the space. A Little Late will be a welcomed addition to the format.
A Little Late with Lilly Singh will debut in the fall on NBC. You can continue to follow her YouTube channel and social media account for updates. We also can expect to see her on late night before that, either with a return to The Tonight Show or a stop on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Keep checking Last Night On for updates.
