Lady Gaga celebrated her Academy Award win on Jimmy Kimmel Live! but not before addressing her duet with Bradley Cooper.

Social media, like everything, has its positives and negatives. It just seems like the negatives are outweighing the positives these days. That certainly is the attitude of Lady Gaga after she saw the reaction to  her performance on Sunday night’s Oscars.

Gaga won the award for Best Original Song for “Shallow” which she co-wrote for the film A Star Is Born. The song, like the movie, is a huge hit and massively successful. The performance by Lady Gaga and her co-star/director Bradley Cooper is incredible part of the film. Naturally, the two were asked to perform it during the Academy Awards.

Anticipation was high considering the song’s popularity, the singing talent of Lady Gaga, and eagerness to see Bradley Cooper sing live. It was immediately clear that the two exceeded expectations with the rendition of “Shallow.”

But social media proved that we can’t have nice things without some negativity. Twitter exploded with people suggesting the looks between Cooper and Gaga could only mean they were in love. This despite Cooper’s long-time girlfriend Irina Shayk sitting front row.

Nobody loves stirring the pot when it comes to social media more than Jimmy Kimmel. This is the man who brought “Mean Tweets” to the mainstream after all. So of course the “controversy” surrounding the Oscars performance of “Shallow” was the first topic Kimmel had for Lady Gaga when she visited Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

The eye roll tells us everything we needed to know. It’s surprising that so many people thought there was something going on between Gaga and Cooper. These people are actors. They are professionals at making an audience see them as someone else. As Gaga explained, the song is an important part of their characters’ intimate relationship, so obviously they wanted that to come across live.

It is unfortunate that the story on social media partly detracted from what was an otherwise memorable performance. There shouldn’t have been a need for Lady Gaga or Bradley Cooper to publicly comment on it. But now that she has, hopefully attention can be put back on the talent of the two individuals. Having A Star Is Born back in theaters with more footage should certainly help.
