Don Cheadle headlined a Saturday Night Live that seemed to catch the attention of one very special viewer.

You knew it was coming. It was only a matter of time. But when it came, it still wasn’t any less surprising. But it sounds like Saturday Night Live once again hit a nerve on a particular viewer with last weekend’s episode hosted by Don Cheadle.

We know that Saturday Night Live has some of the most dedicated fans in television. Millions of people tune in each week to see what SNL comes up with. When you’re on your 44th season, it can be expected that fans come and go or have some very particular criticism of what the show thinks is funny.

Last Night On has been tracking how Saturday Night Live is handling politics in 2019. The show continues to use its cold open to cover whatever major story dominated headlines that week. But we’ve noticed it has scaled back some of the politically-driven sketches in favor of more original characters and sketch ideas.

The show could be looking ahead, knowing that once the 2020 campaign gets into full swing, it will be impossible not to cover things like campaign speeches and debates. But we knew that it was only a matter of time before politics became a central focus of another episode in season 44.

That seemed to be the cast last Saturday with host Don Cheadle. The show’s cold open took aim at President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency in response to the so-called border crisis. Alec Baldwin returned to portray the president and once again caught the wrath of President Trump:

The producers, writers, and cast at Saturday Night Live must love this. Not only does it prove that they are getting under Trump’s skin, but his tweet only drives more attention to the show. If a clip was enough to get a tweet from Trump, then anyone who hadn’t seen it certainly went looking for it after Trump’s complaint.

All things considered, it wasn’t even one of SNL’s strongest or harshest sketches featuring Baldwin’s Trump. For this to be the one that brought on Trump’s angry Twitter persona may be more indicative of how annoyed the president is with coverage of his national emergency.

In addition to the hilarity of President Trump getting so worked up over a comedy show, there is cause for concern in what he said. While they may ultimately be empty threats, his commentary about “retribution” and investigations into television show demonstrate his thought process. In his mind, no one should be critical of his decisions and those who are deserve to be punished.

Alec Baldwin responded to President Trump’s tweets by suggesting his family’s safety could be at risk. Baldwin has every right to be concerned when it comes to his family. We’ve seen examples of how Trump supporters react to anyone they consider an enemy. If the president continues to single out SNL, NBC, or Baldwin, they those concerns will only increase.

Overall, this incident is a win for Saturday Night Live and a loss for President Donald Trump. The show gets free publicity and people are talking about an otherwise so-so sketch. Trump’s reaction proves that even in the middle of an apparent national emergency, he is worried about a comedy show making fun of him. SNL is just doing what it has done for the past 44 years while Trump continues to reveal his true self with every Twitter outburst. It’s probably a safe bet to say we’ll see Alec Baldwin again on Saturday. Stay tuned.
