Jimmy Kimmel helped Michelle Obama get some things off her chest
By Matt Moore
No longer the First Lady, Michelle Obama was free to say whatever was on her mind during her interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
It’s no secret that there is a contrast between the tenure of President Barack Obama and his successor President Donald Trump. The two have very different backgrounds and leadership styles to say the least. Some differences also exist between First Lady Melania Trump and former First Lady Michelle Obama (except when it comes to speeches).
Mrs. Trump and Mrs. Obama have two different approaches to their roles in the public spotlight. Melania Trump has been less visible and only recently made her first solo trip outside of the country. Michelle Obama frequented events, advocacy seminars, and television appearances. It’s not to say that one way is better than the other or that the first lady should be front and center all times. Only that the methods are different.
Mrs. Trump is rarely heard from especially when compared again to Mrs. Obama. The former first lady was vocal about the causes she supported and also spoke openly about raising her family and helping her husband during their time in the White House. But Jimmy Kimmel felt like there was more Michelle Obama had to say but couldn’t in her capacity as first lady. So he gave her a little help last night:
It is impossible to imagine the current first lady participating in a sketch like this, never mind appearing on her own on a late night show. It would especially be unlikely for her to be a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! considering Kimmel thinks Melania is much happier away from Donald Trump.
Kimmel’s lines for Obama missed more than hit in terms of hitting something on the former first lady’s mind. She too has trouble with her daughters’ names. George Clooney is everyone’s freebie according to her. But she has had plenty of vegetables, that much we know.
Efforts by late night hosts to “humanize” politicians and others in public office can sometimes backfire. Jimmy Fallon knows this all too well. But Michelle Obama has never been someone who needs help seeming like an ordinary individual in an extraordinary situation. If you really want to know what she has to say, you’ll have to pick up her memoir Becoming.
