The climax of the Season 3 finale of Better Call Saul indicates the death of a major character, but is this person actually dead?

Before you read the rest of this article, I would be remiss if I didn’t inform you of the SPOILERS within. Only read on ahead if you’re completely caught up on Better Call Saul, up to the season finale of Season 3.

You have been warned!!

Now that we’ve got the SPOILER ALERT out of the way, I can talk about the big moment from the last Better Call Saul. The relationship between Jimmy McGill and his older brother Chuck has finally come to a smoldering climax. Sadly, after the legal battles between Jimmy and Chuck drove them apart, things only got much, much worse. Forced into retirement and struggling with his mental instabilities, Chuck apparently kills himself by setting his home on fire with a lantern.

Of course, nothing is confirmed at this point. The episode closes with the flames starting to spread in the house. Credits rolled before anything else could be established, but the obvious implication here is that Chuck perishes in the blaze he started himself. Still, it’s always hard to trust that characters are actually killed if no body is shown.

Disturbing.

While this means Chuck could still be alive, it does seem incredibly unlikely. He’s obviously not around during the events of Breaking Bad, which confirms that, at the least, Jimmy and Chuck never reconcile. But the “proof” that Chuck seems to actually be dead comes from actor Michael McKean, who spoke about the scene with the New York Times. Asked whether he was “sure” if Chuck is dead, McKean had the following to say:

“I am. I know they want to bring me in for some flashbacks this coming season, but that’s kind of beside the point. One of the things that made Jimmy Saul Goodman is the burden of, if not guilt, then that nagging feeling of having being somehow involved [in Chuck’s demise]. So that’s what he has to deal with, and it’s one of the things that made him wind up in a Cinnabon in Omaha.

In any case we probably won’t know for certain until Season 4 of the series premieres. We don’t have a release date yet as to when that will be, but I’m guessing spring 2018. It’s going to be a long wait, that much is for sure.
