James Corden announces his next shot in the late night arms race with Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special 2017, May 22 at 10pm.

The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special will include a new installment of the segment-turned-phenomenon as well as another favorite of Corden fans, Toddlerography. Toddlerography involves guests (often professional dancers) taking dance lessons from toddlers. Corden will also play some of his favorite moments from this past season of The Late Late Show, to fill out the hour and showcase what makes his show stand out. Last year’s special, which followed a similar structure, earned an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Special.

Carpool Karaoke began as a segment for Comic Relief in 2011 with George Michael as a guest. Corden brought the concept stateside with him in 2015 when he took over hosting duties for The Late Late Show. The segment has since become a staple of the hour and easily Corden’s best known bit, woven into almost everything he does. Before he hosted the Tony Awards, he did a special edition with the best-known nominees singing their favorite Broadway hits.

It’s success is attributed to many things – the unabashed fandom, the positivity, the mix of celebrities doing their own songs and favorite songs, Corden giving 100, 100 percent of the time. Then, there’s the sheer range of celebrities, all of whom – J. Lo, Michelle Obama, Stephen Curry – see more than on board. The video of Adele’s appearance holds the YouTube record for most watched late night clip.

While Corden will obviously continue the series on his show, he is also executive producing (and Apple Music is developing) a half-hour standalone series.  And, if imitation is the highest form of flattery, Corden can count Spike, who are developing Caraoke Showdown with Craig Robinson, among his.
