22. Taking on the greed of FIFA

On the topic of sports, there are a lot of soccer fans out there as well. The FIFA World Cup is always a major event for fans of the sport, even for John Oliver. But according to the host of Last Week Tonight, his excitement for the big game is hindered by the horrible things he knows about FIFA.

Some of the first signs of trouble came when it was announced that the FIFA World Cup would be taking place in Brazil. Soccer is very popular in Brazil, so you’t think the residents there would be ecstatic. However, the news was causing so much unrest that people were rioting and having altercations with the police. But they actually did have reasons to be upset.

First of all, for the FIFA World Cup, an entirely brand new stadium was to be built. The structure would only be accessible by boat, meaning the place would become useless as soon as the event was over. That’s nearly $300 million wasted on a brand new stadium which will only be used a small handful of times. On top of that, FIFA would be getting a $250 million tax break from Brazil, and would greatly benefit while the people of Brazil themselves would not.
