23. Revealing how sports stadiums are a huge financial disaster

Americans sure do love their sports. Between basketball, football, and baseball, people love to grab a beer and watch teams of grown men fighting over a ball. And while there’s nothing at all wrong with enjoying a game in an official team stadium, many fans may not realize it was their own tax dollars which funded these structures.

We have seen sports teams threatening to leave their cities to play their sport elsewhere. The people who would be screwed the most by these decisions would be the taxpayers, as they’ve been footing the bill for the construction of these stadiums. With potholes needing filled and more schools needing built, communities would literally suffer when major sports teams switch cities.

On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver dove into the issue so Americans would realize what they were paying for. Despicably, he showed how the Miami Marlins milked $500 million from taxpayers claiming they couldn’t afford to build their own stadium. Financial reports later contradicted that statement, proving huge financial profits for the team. In the end, Oliver— dressed as a coach— delivered a pep talk, asking viewers to “make them pay” the next time a sports team tries to build a new stadium.
