Stephen Colbert issued a blistering response to President Donald Trump following the latest developments in the Ukraine-Russia peace talks. The Late Show host heard more evidence confirming his belief that Trump does not care about Ukraine.
Colbert reported that President Trump sent Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Saudi Arabia for Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations. The only problem? Ukraine wasn't invited.
The comedian noted how hard it is to "find peace" when one side isn't involved. Colbert compared it to a couples therapy session in which the wife stays home, leaving the husband and therapist to conclude it's all her fault.
"It's clear that Trump is pro-Russia," Colbert said. He called out Trump for arguing Ukraine will have to make major concessions to end the war. But when it came to addressing what Russia would have to give up, Trump claimed "maybe Russia will give up a lot, maybe they won't."
That sort of vague answer didn't do anything to dissuade Colbert from his position. "Firm, clear, confident," Colbert said sarcastically in response to Trump.
As if that wasn't enough, Trump's comments blaming Ukraine for starting the war also caught Colbert's attention. It gave the Late Show host the chance to launch into an extended bit in which Trump claims the hobbits stole the ring from Sauron. Mocking President Trump and showing off his Lord of the Rings knowledge combined Colbert's two favorite things, earning a round of applause from the audience.
Trump's social media post calling Volodymyr Zelenskyy a dictator and accusing Ukraine of preventing free elections cemented Colbert's case. So while the comedian didn't sound surprised to hear Trump repeat Russian talking points, it's not something he's ever going to let pass without a response on The Late Show.
