Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. was front and center on Wednesday for his confirmation hearing to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. Prior to going before senators, RFK Jr. received a damning condemnation from his cousin Caroline Kennedy. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert happily picked apart the family drama.
Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of John F. Kennedy, urged the Senate to reject her cousin's nomination. She compared RFK Jr. to a predator and warned against letting him oversee the nation's health agencies.
"Oh, I love an old fashioned Kennedy fight," Stephen Colbert joked in his monologue. "Usually these things get worked out in Nantucket with croquet mallets until it's time for oysters, gin, and the NDAs."
Colbert then outlined Caroline Kennedy's credentials and why her warning should be taken seriously. But the Late Show host did take exception to Caroline's "predator" line about RFK Jr. "You're not a predator if the animal you're eating was already run over by a Volvo. Technically, you're a scavenger," he joked in reference to RFK Jr.'s infamous Central Park roadkill bear story.
Caroline's letter also invoked the memories of her father, President Kennedy, and uncles Robert F. Kennedy and Ted Kennedy. She claimed they'd be "disgusted" by RFK Jr.'s politics and scientific beliefs.
Colbert seemed to be in total agreement as he picked through the key moments of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s confirmation hearing. The Late Show host highlighted RFK incorrectly citing a study on COVID-19 as one example.
But nothing tickled Colbert as much as Kennedy's exchange with Senator Bernie Sanders over onesies. Yes, onesies. Colbert could barely keep it together as he recapped Sanders' efforts to grill Kennedy over anti-vax clothing for babies.
The hearing was just the latest example of why Colbert thinks it will be "a long four years." At least he can still laugh along the way.
