Stephen Colbert: Donald Trump saved us from Donald Trump

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tried to make heads or tails of President Donald Trump's tariff changes on Wednesday. Ultimately, Stephen Colbert concluded that Trump had saved the nation from ... Trump.

The stock market experienced a free fall over the past week after President Trump announced tariffs on goods from dozens of nations. Economists struggled to understand the reasoning or how the administration calculated the tariffs.

But all that changed on Wednesday afternoon when President Trump announced a 90-day pause on the tarrifs he introduced. Stephen Colbert led off his monologue that night by covering the good-ish news.

"This afternoon, after days of historic market losses thanks to Trump's random-ass tariffs, the Dow skyrocketed nearly 3,000 points," Colbert said. "And you know the old saying: Whatever goes up must continue to go up forever.'"

A very sarcastic Colbert continued, sounding thankful that President Donald Trump stepped in to save the nation from a previous President Donald Trump decision. The Late Show host added that he actually has something in common with Donald Trump: neither man knows what Trump is doing with the tariffs.

Stephen Colbert calls out Donald Trump's flip-flop on tariffs

Stephen Colbert sounded less than surprised to report that President Donald Trump changed course on his economic policies. But that didn't mean the comedian wasn't going to point it out to his audience of millions.

Colbert referred to Trump's tariff pause as a negotiation tactic and a change in policy. On it's own, that's all fine and good for the late-night TV host.

The comedian called it a "slight adjustment" from the weekend, when the White House said "this is not a negotiation" with other countries and President Trump posed "MY POLICIES WILL NEVER CHANGE."

So what advice does Stephen Colbert have? Other than to stock up on canned goods and rice for the economic nuclear winter, the Late Show host didn't have much to offer. It seems that Colbert is going to buckle in and try to keep up with Trump's changing policies as best as he can.
