Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert have both arrived at the same jucture in their career. They are the veteran hosts of popular talk shows. They did, however, take very different paths to get there. Meyers was a cast member on Saturday Night Live for over a decade, and was head writer during his last few years on the show. Colbert, on the other hand, failed to make it past the audition.

Meyers was a recent guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and he talked about his tenure on SNL. It was the revelatory info from Colbert, however, that proved to be most interesting. Meyers will be appearing in an upcoming documentary about SNL, given his role in the show's history, but Colbert revealed that he was also interviewed for the doc about his failed audition.

Colbert will appear in a new SNL documentary

"I recently got interviewed for the documentary they're doing," Colbert stated. "Like the people who didn't get hired." Meyers was genuinely surprised by this news, and noted that several iconic comics have been shown the door at SNL over the decades.

Colbert revealed that the documentary team actually had him watch his audition tape while they filmed him react. "I had no idea," he remarked. "They asked, 'when was the last time you saw this,' and I said 'they don't send you these!'"

The comedian claims he misremembered the audition

The Late Show host admitted that he was nervous to react to the audition tape, but found that it wasn't as bad as he remembered:

"It was 1996 and I was terrified to watch it... And it was okay. I understand why they gave me a shot... My memories of it were not correct."

Seth Meyers noted that everybody who makes it far into the audition process is talented, and gave his own two cents regarding his audition tape. He revealed that he watched his audition when he had already moved to late night, but was so taken aback by the memories that he felt like he was going to throw up. "My memory of the day is hard to process," he explained.

Needless to say, things worked out for both men.
