Colin Jost and Michael Che are everywhere these days. The comedians are usually behind the desk of Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live, but they're set to drop the first every live stream comedy special on Peacock this month.

Consequently, Jost and Che are doing the late night rounds. They dropped by The Tonight Show to catch up with a Weekend Update alum, Jimmy Fallon, but they clearly had no problem crossing the line when it came to delivering political punchlines.

Jost and Che took over The Tonight Show monologue

Jost and Che joined Fallon during his Tonight Show monologue, and proceeded to hijack it with some jokes that Fallon was hesitant to make for a couple reasons. For one, they were more cutting that the stuff Fallon usually dishes out to Tonight Show viewers.

For another, they referenced events that had happened months ago. The host literally made note of this second point mid-monologue. "Wait, what? I can’t do that joke," Fallon explained. "That news is almost three months old." Jost and Che then joined him on stage and effectively took over.

"There’s been so much news that we haven’t been able to joke about," Jost explained, before passing the baton off to his partner. Michael Che proceeded to drop the most shocking joke of the whole bit when he made reference to the assassination attempt made on President Donald Trump.

Fallon said the first part of the joke, but then he hesitated and Che came in for the kill. "In July, Donald Trump chose Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate," Fallon stated. Che's punchline?

"Well, I guess he can’t dodge every bullet."

The joke drew a surprised reaction from the audience, but anyone familiar with Colin Jost and Michael Che know that they love to push the envelope on occasion. They especially love to do so when those in the audience least expect.

It's part of why they've held down the Weekend Update desk for so long, and why the annual segment where they force each other to say jokes the other has written does so well! We probably won't get to see them hijack The Tonight Show too many more times, but we're glad it happened at least once.
