Stephen Colbert still celebrating Kamala Harris' 'smackdown' of Donald Trump
By Matt Moore
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was live following the first debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. But the late-night show wasn't done celebrating on Wednesday night as Stephen Colbert's monologue recapped more of Harris' "smackdown."
Most reactions to the presidential debate scored it in favor of the vice president. Unsurprisingly, late-night TV was eager to kick Trump while he was down. Another day removed from the debate gave Colbert and his team more time to pore over the highlights.
"Harris ran Trump over with a truck," Colbert said at the top of Wednesday night's monologue. "It was so bad, RFK Jr. scooped him up and put him in his roadkill freezer."
Colbert's celebration was just getting started. He eagerly shared footage from Fox News in which the network didn't try to hide the fact Kamala Harris won the debate. According to Colbert, the only thing worse would be if Hannibal Lecter turned on Trump next.
The comedian also seemed amused by one GOP source suggesting that Trump will do something drastic in the next week to change the news cycle. But the only idea Colbert could offer the former president was to try a new hairstyle.
Colbert's monologue also made sure to reminder viewers that Trump went down to the "spin room" immediately following the debate. The Late Show host speculated Trump knew he had messed up during the showdown with Vice President Harris.
Colbert mocked Trump for going there to "lie up close and personal." A clip of Trump claiming various poll numbers reported him as the winner had Colbert imagining the former president making up numbers like "smeventeen" and "76 trombones."
The only thing that would make Colbert happier than watching Trump lose the debate would be if the ex-president agreed to a second one. The Harris campaign has put the offer (or challenge) on the table.
Trump responded to the offer by claiming that only a loser asks for a rematch. But Colbert had a counterpoint: "She tore out your heart, showed it to you while it was still beating, then ate it on national television. And now, she would like seconds."
It doesn't sound likely that will get Harris vs. Trump II. But the first debate provided enough joy for Stephen Colbert that he won't be disappointed.
