Stephen Colbert previews Trump's debate strategy: Mostly lies
By Matt Moore
We are just days away from the first presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. But according to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the ex-president is already giving the country a preview of what to expect when he's on the debate stage.
There was a chance Donald Trump backed out of the September 10 debate on ABC. Few believe he can go toe-to-toe against Vice President Harris and get an outcome like he did against President Joe Biden. However, it seems like Trump and Harris have settled on the rules and will meet next Tuesday.
Stephen Colbert's monologue on Thursday night offered a preview of Trump's debate strategy. The late-night TV host pointed to Trump's town hall performance in Pennsylvania as a taste of what to expect: mostly lies meant to scare people about Kamala Harris.
Colbert cut to Trump's Fox News appearance where the former president claimed that voters in Pennsylvania have no choice but to vote for him. "'You've got no choice' isn't the most exciting pitch," Colbert responded. It's like when Cracker Barrel changed their slogan to 'look, it's us or the gas station.'"
The Late Show host then couldn't pass up the chance to mock Trump for another unforced error. During the town hall, Trump expressed disbelief that anyone in New Hampshire could vote for "him," with "him" being Joe Biden.
Colbert quickly jumped on the gaffe, reminding Trump that no one in New Hampshire will vote for Biden because the president isn't on the ballot.
As far as Colbert sees it, Trump's debate strategy is to either misrepresent the truth or get it wrong completely. Either choice means he'll likely have a tough time against Kamala Harris.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will be live after the debate
No matter what happens during the first debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, we'll hear from Stephen Colbert immediately.
Thursday night's show announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will be live following the debate on Tuesday, September 10. Expect Colbert and his team to have the first word in late-night after what should be an interesting (and possibly entertaining) night.
