Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel won't talk Kamala Harris on Monday night
By Matt Moore
President Joe Biden shocked the country this weekend when he announced he would not seek reelection. Instead, Vice President Kamala Harris earned his endorsement and stands as the presumptive Democratic nominee. While everyone is talking about this unprecedented political moment, don't expect to hear from Seth Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel on Monday night.
Late-night TV has been closely following the aftermath of the first presidential debate. Some hosts like Bill Maher and Jon Stewart made it pretty clear they thought President Biden should step aside, Others, like Stephen Colbert, remained on the fence about Biden's 2024 prospects.
But now that we know Joe Biden won't be president for a second term, late-night TV is free to cover the story from every angle. However, we won't get to hear an immediate response from Seth Meyers or Jimmy Kimmel come Monday night.
That's because both late-night hosts are off on Monday, the first night their fellow comedians have a chance to react to Kamala Harris ascending to the top of the Democratic ticket.
Late Night with Seth Meyers won't air a new episode on Monday night. The NBC show is off this week and will be pre-empted by Olympics coverage come next week. It comes down to poor timing as Meyers misses his chance to take a closer look at Biden stepping down, Harris getting the spotlight, and Team Trump responding.
Over on ABC, Jimmy Kimmel remains on his summer vacation. So instead of its namesake, Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be led by guest host Lamorne Morris on Monday night. Kimmel does have an expected return date, but Harris' campaign will be in full swing by then.
Kimmel did take time on Sunday to acknowledge President Biden. The late-night TV host shared an image of himself with President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden thanking them for their service and dedication to the country.
Still, Monday night will feature new episodes of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for fans looking for late-night TV's response to the big news.
