Jay Leno is not the most beloved host in Tonight Show history. The competition is stiff, of course, but his handling of the Conan O'Brien situation was, for many, difficult to overlook. Despite his behind the scenes antics, though, Leno was a tireless host who held down the Tonight Show desk for over two decades.

You don't get hired, then rehired, to host the most famous talk show in the world without being good at it. That said, Jay Leno wasn't always on his A-game. The comedian was asked whether he ever got bored during interviews during an appearance on The Late Late Show in 2014, and he admitted that one guest in particular made job very difficult.

Leno struggled to interview The Bachelor's Trista Sutter

Leno named former reality star Trista Sutter as the guest that he struggled with the most. He told Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson that he simply couldn't find a groove in their conversation, and went into autopilot mode as a result:

"I'm sitting and I'm looking at the side of her head. I couldn't be less interested. I've never seen this stupid reality show — you know what it was."

It got worse. Evidently, Leno ran into Sutter in the parking lot after the episode wrapped, and he reportedly failed to recognize her. One can only imagine the awkwardness that ensured. "I said, "Sure, how're you doing?' She goes, 'Good,'" Leno recalled. "So what's your name?' She goes, 'What?' 'What's your name?!'"

Sutter later joked about the interview on Twitter

Leno's reputation for being critical of others doesn't make this statement sound particularly nice. Especially when peers like Jimmy Fallon or Conan O'Brien share the reasoning and experiences behind their worst late night guests.

Fortunately, Trista Sutter took the criticism in stride. She didn't get made at Leno, and even gave him a humorous shout out on Twitter following his Late Late Show appearance. "Ironic that I'm the topic of convo on @CraigyFerg last show," she wrote. "Thx 4 the shoutout @jayleno! Next time, plz mention my book."
