NBC delivers bad news about Late Night with Seth Meyers at the worst time

USA TODAY NETWORK

The late-night TV landscape feels very different this week, and NBC just made that change even more noticeable. Coming out of the Memorial Day holiday, late-night fans won't have much to get excited about this week — especially when it comes to Late Night with Seth Meyers.

After the emotional finale of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last week, viewers looking for another nightly dose of political comedy from Seth Meyers are out of luck. NBC has confirmed that Late Night with Seth Meyers will be dark all week, airing only reruns through Friday night.

Under normal circumstances, a week of repeats in late May would hardly be surprising. But the timing could not feel worse for fans of political late-night comedy.

With Stephen Colbert officially signing off and the future of politically focused late-night television facing a certain level of doubt, Meyers’ absence leaves a major void on network TV this week. Without new episodes of Late Night this week, there’s even less of a critical voice available at a moment when audiences may be looking for it most.

The break also highlights how dramatically the late-night landscape has shifted in just a matter of days. Colbert’s departure already marked the end of an era for CBS. Now, with Meyers temporarily sidelined as well, fans are getting an early glimpse at what network late-night looks like with fewer politically driven monologues on the air. Thankfully, Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be back on the air this week, but his summer break is just around the corner.

Instead of new episodes, NBC will air reruns of Late Night with Seth Meyers this week. It started last night with a repeat of the April 21 episode with Aubrey Plaza, Gaten Matarazzo, and Dan Bucatinsky.

Tuesday will revisit the April 22 show featuring Colman Domingo and Scott MacArthur. The next night follows with the April 23 episode with Charlize Theron and Jorma Taccone.

The week closes out on Thursday as NBC rebroadcasts the April 27 episode that welcomed Rose Byrne and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Late Night wraps up on Friday with a second showing of the April 29 show featuring Lena Dunham and Karl Urban.

No official word is out yet regarding Late Night with Seth Meyers's return next week. However, recent history suggests that Seth Meyers and his team will be back to work on Monday. Fans already missing out on late-night TV post-Late Show will just have to hang in there for one more week.
