In many ways, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has to be considered the most unique talk show that is currently on mainstream television. After all, the show that is hosted by a veteran of The Daily Show has twice now released lengthy segments dedicated to the Air Bud film franchise. On top of that, the show's host, John Oliver, has named a shocking show as ‘one of the funniest’ on television.

Once fans learn facts like that about the talk show and its host, it may be harder for them to be surprised by the kind of antics that Last Week Tonight can engage in. Still, the fascinating talk show recently went to extraordinary lengths to do something odd that inherently required fans to go the extra mile for it to pay off. While many regular Last Week Tonight viewers may not realize it, the talk show recently featured an Easter Egg that mocked dedicated fans.

How an Easter Egg from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver mocked passionate fans

Another one of the things that makes Last Week Tonight with John Oliver such a unique talk show is that it will present lengthy segments about topics other similar series would never touch. For example, the most recent season of John Oliver's show has covered topics like Bari Weiss, the U.S. Presidential library system, juvenile courts, air traffic controllers, and tipping.

On October 26, 2025, Last Week Tonight season 11 episode 27 yet again covered an unusual subject when it focused on Medicare Advantage. While covering that topic that can trap Americans seeking health care, Oliver's show featured a truly incredible Easter Egg.

During that episode, Oliver's show played footage of a very real Medicare Advantage commercial that featured two actors talking about a company that provides those services. While discussing the
Medicare Advantage company, the two actors spoke in an overly enthusiastic way, went into incredibly great detail, and the woman gesticulated wildly. At the end of the episode of Last Week Tonight, the show featured a cameo from Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman acting like the aforementioned actors to make fun of them and Medicare Advantage programs.

Last Week Tonight's fake commercial at one point featured a phone number that appeared onscreen, but viewers were specifically told not to call it. Despite that, the Last Week Tonight team was ready with an Easter Egg because anyone who called that number heard a voicemail recorded by Offerman. That voicemail began with Offerman calling out anyone who dialed the number. “Hello there. First, I think you were explicitly told not to call this number, but you've clearly done it anyway. So, to make use of this time, here are a few woodworking tips."

As the voicemail continued, Offerman went through with that tease as he could be heard offering woodworking tips about understanding grain direction, reinforcing wood joints, and finishing surfaces. Finally, the voicemail ended with Offerman telling fans not to call the phone number again. "Please never call this number again. Goodbye.”

The fact that Last Week Tonight spent money to set up a dedicated phone number solely for the kind of fan who would call a phone number after being told not to exemplifies what makes the show special.
