Jimmy Kimmel opened his monologue on Thursday night by sending his condolences to those affected by the deadly crash in Washington, D.C. The comedian then turned his attention to Donald Trump, blasting the president for suggesting DEI initiatives played a role in the accident.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion frameworks became a hot-button political issue during the last election cycle. President Trump has promised to remove such policies, suggesting they result in underqualified employees.
The president took that theory a step further in the wake of the D.C. accident in which an Army helicopter collided with a commercial flight. Many were quick to condemn Trump's comments, including Jimmy Kimmel.
"Take it from a man who looked directly into an eclipse," Kimmel said. "You need common sense," he added, sarcastically agreeing with Trump.
"If a straight while male pilot had injected a little bleach into that helicopter, none of this would have happened," he continued. Kimmel even went so far as to suggest just hearing "Blackhawk helicopter" was enough to make Trump think of DEI.
Kimmel then went after the people who voted for Trump in the 2024 election. He questioned if Trump supporters are OK with the president's commentary.
"Every time there's a shooting at a school, they're like 'it's too soon to be talking about gun laws,' but never too soon for Trump to point his finger."
The late-night host claimed Trump had a pretty easy job: acknowledge the tragedy, offer condolences, and promise to investigate the cause.
But Kimmel said Trump can't do that because "he's callous, he's racist, he's sexist, and most of all, he's stupid. He's a deeply stupid man."
The comedian wasn't done there as he tried to make sense of Trump's reaction. Kimmel theorized the president gets annoyed when a disaster gets more media attention than him. In fact, Kimmel even called it "miraculous" how Trump managed to find new ways to be "a dirt bag."
More information about the crash has been released, but it doesn't sound as if Donald Trump will walk back any of his comments. That certainly won't surprise Jimmy Kimmel, the same way no one should be surprised that the late-night TV host will continue to use his monologue to attack the president.
